Cupping Therapy: When Regular Massage Needs Backup

Why adding cups to a massage can help when tight muscles feel stubborn, stuck, or hard to reach.

Cupping Massage - When Regular Massage Needs Backup

Sometimes regular massage gets right to the point. A therapist works into the shoulders, back, hips, or legs, and the tissue starts to soften. Other times, an area feels stubborn in a different way. It may feel tight, stuck, dense, or like pressure alone is not quite getting through.

That is where cupping massage can be a helpful addition. Cupping uses suction to lift the skin and underlying tissue, which feels very different from traditional massage pressure. Instead of only pressing down into the body, the cups create a pulling sensation. [1]

This does not mean cupping replaces massage. At Sacramento Massage Studio, we think of it more like backup. Hands-on massage can work through pressure, movement, and specific contact, while the cups bring in a different kind of stimulus. Used together, they can make the session feel more complete for certain types of tension.

This can be especially helpful for areas that feel compressed or hard to access. The upper back, shoulders, and areas around the shoulder blades are common places where people describe that “stuck” feeling. Cupping can sometimes help those areas feel like they have more space.

The marks from cupping can look dramatic, but they are not the goal of the treatment. They happen because suction affects tiny blood vessels under the skin, and they usually fade over time. [2] The real question is not how intense the marks look. The better question is how the body responds.

Cupping massage is not magic, and it is not for every person or every session. But when regular massage needs a little support, adding cups can be a thoughtful way to approach tension from a different angle.
