Is Facial Massage the Same as a Facial?

facial massage versus facial sacramento

It is easy to see why people ask us this. The word facial is right there, and our treatment includes the face, hot towels, and moisturizer. But facial massage and a facial are not the same service. A facial is primarily about caring for the skin. Our facial massage is about massage—just in areas that a regular full-body session may not have enough time to explore.

A traditional facial is usually performed by a licensed esthetician and may include cleansing, exfoliation, masks, extractions, or products selected for a particular skin concern. The goal is skincare. Depending on the facial, someone may be looking for help with dryness, oiliness, congestion, texture, or simply giving their skin more attention. [1]

At Sacramento Massage Studio, facial massage has a different focus. The therapist works with the face, scalp, jaw, and neck, following areas of tension and using massage techniques rather than skincare procedures. We are not analyzing pores, performing extractions, applying peels, or trying to change your skin. The purpose is to give these often-overworked areas more time, help you relax, and make the massage feel more complete. [2]

This can be a good fit for someone who clenches their jaw, carries tension around the temples or brow, loves scalp massage, or always wishes the neck work lasted longer. The pressure around the face and jaw is thoughtful and comfortable; it does not need to feel intense to feel worthwhile. Many people are surprised by how connected the face, scalp, jaw, and neck feel once all four receive focused attention.

We do use hot towels and facial moisturizer because anything placed on the face should be appropriate for facial skin. The moisturizer is made specifically for the face—we do not use massage lotion there. The hot towels add warmth and comfort. Those touches may make the treatment feel a little more spa-like, but they support the massage; they do not turn it into a skincare service.

So which one should you choose? If your main goal is skincare, book a facial with an esthetician. If you want more time spent on your face, scalp, jaw, and neck for tension and relaxation, facial massage is probably the better fit. The two services can complement each other, but one does not replace the other. Think of facial massage not as a facial with less skincare, but as a massage that finally gives everything above the shoulders the attention it rarely gets.
