How Long Should You Wait?

Botox appointments and massage appointments sometimes land in the same week. When that happens, the order matters. The honest answer is that there is no single, research-backed waiting period for everyone. Cleveland Clinic recommends waiting at least 24 hours before a facial or massage, while some injectors recommend several days or a full week. If your injector gives you the longer instruction, follow it. [1]

Why the Recommendations Vary

Many familiar Botox aftercare rules are precautionary rather than supported by strong clinical trials. A 2016 international consensus panel found no evidence supporting older recommendations to avoid pressure on treated areas. A 2025 study of 5,014 upper-face patients also reported no eyelid drooping when extended restrictions were replaced with only 10 minutes of immediate precautions. However, that study did not specifically test professional facial massage, so it cannot tell us that immediate massage is safe. [2][3]

Full-Body Massage and Facial Massage Are Different

Full-Body Massage

A full-body massage may not include any facial work, but the face cradle still matters. Botox is commonly injected around the forehead, brow, and eyes, exactly where someone may feel pressure while lying face-down. If your injector has not given you a specific timeline, 24 hours is a commonly published minimum. But if they told you to wait a week, a general article should not be used to shorten that instruction. Tell your massage therapist when the injections were done and where they were placed. [1]

Facial, Scalp, Jaw, and Neck Massage

This is more deliberate pressure than washing your face or touching it briefly. Because research has not established an exact safe cutoff for this kind of work, a one-week wait is a reasonable conservative recommendation when an injector gives it, especially if bruising, swelling, or tenderness remains.

The Easiest Way to Schedule Both

If you want both appointments in the same week, massage first and Botox second is the simplest order. If Botox comes first, ask the injector for a specific date when massage can resume and share that information with your massage therapist. If you also received filler or another injectable, do not assume the Botox timeline applies. Different treatments can come with different instructions.

When to Wait Longer

One week is not a magic cutoff supported by data showing that day six is unsafe and day seven is safe. It is a conservative buffer in an area where the evidence is limited, and that does not make it unreasonable. The injector knows what was used, where it was placed, and how much was injected, so their recommendation takes priority. New vision problems, unusual weakness, or difficulty speaking, swallowing, or breathing require prompt medical attention. [4]
