When Deep Tissue Massage Isn’t the Right Choice

Deep tissue massage can be amazing when your body is asking for focused, therapeutic work. But like any good tool, it’s all about using it at the right time and in the right way. At our studio, we love deep tissue when it’s a good fit, but we also know that “deeper” is not always “better.” Massage is generally considered low-risk when performed by a trained practitioner, though vigorous massage requires more caution in certain situations.

There are a few times when deep tissue massage may not be the best choice, at least not right away. If you have an acute injury, a fever or active illness, or you’re taking certain medications that can increase bruising or sensitivity, deeper pressure may be something we modify or avoid. The same goes for clients with fragile or thinning skin, including many older adults, where heavy pressure can be too much for the tissue even if the muscles themselves feel tight.

When Deep Tissue Massage Isn’t the Right Choice

Pregnancy can be another example where fit matters. Massage is still a wonderful option for many pregnant clients, but in the first trimester, we may recommend provider clearance before moving forward, especially if there are any concerns or risk factors. That is not because massage is automatically unsafe, it’s simply part of making thoughtful, individualized decisions and choosing the approach that makes the most sense for your body right now. [1]

Here’s one detail people often don’t realize: some medications can make deep pressure less ideal even when you feel totally fine. Blood thinners can increase the risk of bruising or bleeding with forceful massage, and corticosteroids, including some long-term steroid medications or topical steroids used over time, can thin the skin and make it bruise more easily. That means the issue is not always pain tolerance. Sometimes it’s tissue resilience, which is exactly why an experienced therapist will adjust pressure instead of forcing a treatment that isn’t the right fit.

The good news: this rarely means you should skip massage altogether. In most cases, it just means choosing the right style for the moment. Our integrated massage is designed for exactly that. We customize every session and can blend techniques inspired by Swedish/relaxation massage, lymphatic-style work, prenatal massage, and therapeutic focused work to create something that feels both effective and appropriate for your body. Sometimes the smartest massage is not the deepest one, it’s the one that meets you where you are. [2]
